Mirrors:  Where should they go?  A mirror answers many a dilemma besides "mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?"
  • A floor to ceiling mirror is used to make a room wider, or longer.  I personally like a mirror that butts together without a beveled overlay for a smooth, clean look.
  • A mirror should reflect something important, or bring the outside, inside.  You should not be sitting on a sofa looking across a room and see yourself.
  • A grouping of different size mirrors makes for a very interesting wall grouping.  Combining antique, contemporary, old world, copper, silver, etc.
  • Since I believe less is more, do not ever overkill with mirrors.  Many people tend to do this, especially in a contemporary home.
Window Treatments: Since this is a subject that could take up a dozen columns, I will touch on it briefly for now.
Take a look at some examples on my Portfolio Page.
  • Window treatments are one of the single most important features of your home.  They can take the simplest home and make it elegant, give an elegant home panache.  They can make a den warmer, a bedroom sexier and so on.
  • Treating windows is an area where each room must be treated individually.  Do you want a cornice, romans, lambriquins, swags or jabots?  Do you want bishop-sleeves, tied back drapes, full drapes?  These treatments are all over-treatments and have absolutely nothing to do with what actually goes on the window.
  • Can your room use shutter or wood blinds?  I love both!
  • This is an area where you definitely need professional help as the selections are endless and can be mind boggling for the laymen.
Wallpaper or Wall Treatments:  Today there are so many ways to dress up your walls and the ideas and colors used are wonderful.
  • We can stucco, rag, faux-paint, stencil, sponge, trompe-loeil (fool the eye), wainscot (a facing or paneling, usually of wood).
  • Crown molding can be added in many different areas.  Architectural polyurethane moldings and columns add interest and dimensions to the areas.
  • Wallpaper - There are so many different types that it would take ten pages to describe them all.
  • Borders - This has become a must for today's decorating.  It gives a finished look to a painted wall, an interesting accent to a bare room.  Borders can be used as chair-rails, around windows, or to frame a headboard.  Today's borders vary in sizes, with either straight or scalloped edges.

As you can see, there are so many various ways to give your home a face-lift...
You only need to begin!
